Measurements of Solar Irradiance and Effective Temperature as a Probe of Solar Interior Magnetic Fields

چکیده

We argue that a variety of solar data suggest that the activity-cycle timescale variability of the total irradiance is produced by structural adjustments of the solar interior. On the assumption that these adjustments are induced by variations of internal magnetic fields, we use measurements of the total irradiance and effective temperature over the period from 1978 to 1992 to infer the magnitude and location of the magnetic field. Based on an updated stellar evolution model with magnetic fields taken into account, we find that the observations can be explained by fields whose peak values range from 120k to 2.3k gauss, located in the convection zone at depths ranging from r = 0.950R⊙ to 0.997R⊙, respectively. The corresponding maximal radius changes range from 19 to 3 km, and W = d lnR/d lnL from 0.03 to 0.006. All these predictions are consistent with helioseismology and recent measurements carried out by the MDI experiment on SOHO. Subject headings: Sun: interior — Sun: magnetic fields

Technical guide to Set Up a Spectral Solar Direct Normal Irradiance Permanent Station: Study Area- Hannover, Germany

The spectral Direct Normal Irradiance (SDNI) is a basic radiometric quantity from which many other quantities can be derived. It provides not only information about the spectral and distribution of the direct solar radiation reaching a particular location. Accurate knowledge about the spectral direct irradiance shall enable us to gain new scientific results in the: determination of cloud effect...

Large mixing angle oscillations as a probe of the deep solar interior

We re-examine the sensitivity of solar neutrino oscillations to noise in the solar interior using the best current estimates of neutrino properties. Our results show that the measurement of neutrino properties at KamLAND provides new information about fluctuations in the solar environment on scales to which standard helioseismic constraints are largely insensitive. We also show how the determin...

A model of the wavelength dependence of solar irradiance variations

The variation of the solar irradiance over the solar cycle has a strong wavelength dependence, being larger at shorter wavelengths. Here we present simple models of the spectral dependence of irradiance variations between solar activity maximum and minimum. We find that the observations (which concentrate on the UV) cannot be reproduced by a change in effective temperature of the Sun (or of par...

Reconstructed and measured total solar irradiance : Is there a secular trend between 1978 and 2003 ?

Total solar irradiance reconstructed between 1978 and 2003 using solar surface magnetic field distributions is compared with three composites of total solar irradiance measurements. A good correspondence is found with the total solar irradiance composite from PMOD/WRC, with no bias between the three cycles. The agreement with the other composites (the ACRIM composite, mainly based on the Active...

The FIELDS Instrument Suite for Solar Probe Plus

NASA’s Solar Probe Plus (SPP) mission will make the first in situ measurements of the solar corona and the birthplace of the solar wind. The FIELDS instrument suite on SPP will make direct measurements of electric and magnetic fields, the properties of in situ plasma waves, electron density and temperature profiles, and interplanetary radio emissions, amongst other things. Here, we describe the...
